Gutter Cleaning &
Inspection – The greatest prevention of roof damming
(ice backing up under the shingles and into the home
with related water damage) is to have clean gutters that
are pitched properly.
Caulking Exterior
Windows & Doors – A simple way to keep out the
drafts.
Check the Weather
Stripping under the Garage Door (and all exterior doors)
– Eventually it wears out and can allow for drafts and
little animals that like to sneak into the warmer air.
Paint or Stain
Unprotected Wood – Leaving wood without protection
for long periods, particularly flat surfaces like decks
and porches, where moisture can sink in (ice to water to
ice again) can lead to rotting and eventual replacement.
Tightened Down Loose
Shutters, Storm Doors, etc – Nothing is scarier than
hearing the flapping around of shutters or other loose
wood or doors when there is a severe storm.
Driveway Sealing –
An unsealed driveway is susceptible to heaving and
eventual cracking.
Insulate Exposed Pipes,
Floors, Ceilings, and/or Walls to the Outside –
Putting an insulation “collar” around pipes and placing
insulation behind walls that are always cold in the
winter is an inexpensive way to avoid a burst pipe and
significantly warm up a room (i.e. the room over the
garage!!)
Remove the Air
Conditioning Unit – Leaving it in makes for a very
drafty space.
Remove Screens/Put in
Storm Windows – Close up as much of the house as
possible.
Clean Windows – You
spend more time inside in the winter – why not make
looking outside as clear as possible!
Rake the Leaves before
the First Snow Fall – The grass is too hard to grow
anyway, don’t kill the grass before the spring.
Put Out Your Holiday
Lights and Decorations – Why wait until it is
freezing and there is always something more enjoyable to
do.
